Bilaspur:
The Himachal Pradesh Police have lodged an FIR against former Congress MLA from Bilaspur Bumber Thakur for allegedly assaulting police and administrative officials during a protest held outside the Deputy Commissioner’s office in Bilaspur two days ago.
The incident, which was caught on video and circulated widely on social media, has reignited debate over Bumber Thakur’s confrontational political style and ongoing tension with law enforcement.
Protest without permission sparks chaos
According to the FIR filed by Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Shiv Chaudhary, Bumber Thakur led the protest without obtaining prior permission from the district authorities. The demonstration turned disorderly when Bumber Thakur and his supporters were stopped by police officials who were trying to prevent a potential law and order crisis.
ASP Shiv Chaudhary, SDM Rajdeep Singh and DSP Madan Dhiman were present at the location when they asked Bumber Thakur to choose an alternate site for the protest. However, the request was allegedly ignored, leading to a heated altercation.
The timing of the protest added to the gravity of the situation as it coincided with the arrival of BJP national president and Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda’s convoy. Nadda, who enjoys Z-plus security, was visiting the Deputy Commissioner’s office. The police feared that a confrontation between protesters and Nadda’s supporters could escalate into a serious security issue.
Scuffle captured on video
A video of the incident surfaced soon after, showing Bumber Thakur in a heated exchange with ASP Shiv Chaudhary. In the footage, Bumber Thakur is seen pushing the officer and shouting angrily. The ASP is heard warning him, saying, “Don’t push me… and don’t use foul language.”
Despite the warning, Bumber Thakur continued to confront the officer and accused the police of siding with “goons”. He questioned why he was being prevented from submitting a memorandum on alleged drug-related issues.
Bumber Thakur’s son Ishan Thakur later released a video on social media claiming that some miscreants from Punjab had attempted to attack his father in Jabli (Solan) earlier this week.
Bumber survived gun attack during Holi
This is not the first time Bumber Thakur has been involved in a controversy. He previously survived a gun attack during Holi celebrations and was hospitalised for several days. His son Ishan Thakur was arrested in connection with that case and is currently out on bail.
Despite the serious nature of the current case, Bumber Thakur maintains that he was merely attempting to submit a memorandum and was being unfairly targeted. “Why am I being stopped? An officer is openly roaming around with goons,” he was heard saying in the viral video. Bilaspur Deputy Commissioner Rahul Kumar confirmed that a case was registered and assured that a fair and impartial investigation was being conducted.
