Golden Himachal's incredible journey: Writer charts 'intimate dialogue' from state's birth to 77th anniversary

I am Himachal” — A mountain state, nurtured by struggle, shaped by resolve, and adorned with success. My soul is embedded in the sacred soil of this Devbhoomi, and my future gleams in the dreams of my children.
When my 30 hill states were unified on April 15, 1948, I had neither economic power nor infrastructure. All I had was the unwavering spirit of my people— firm as the Himalayas.

From political identity to soaring development

On January 25, 1971, when the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi declared me the 18th full-fledged state of India, it was not just a political moment— it was the recognition of my dignity. That day gave me voice and direction.

The journey of change — Paved through roads

In 1948, only 228 km of roads graced my terrain. Villages were cut off and development halted at mountain passes.
By 2025, the length has surpassed 33,000 km, with ₹4,317 crore allocated in 2024–25 for roads and bridges.
Yet, landslides, snowfall and rugged geography still challenge accessibility. Connectivity has arrived—but seamless mobility remains a dream in remote regions.

Education: From darkness to light

In 1948, my literacy rate was a mere 6.7%, and I had just 331 educational institutions.
In 2025, I stand proud with over 83% literacy, 15,000+ schools and colleges, and a ₹9,560 crore education budget.
Still, the rural belt struggles with quality educators and digital access. Technology has arrived, but reach is incomplete.

Healthcare: The lifeline in the hills

Once, a single doctor served multiple villages. Now, every district has multi-specialty hospitals, ₹3,415 crore health budget, mobile health units, telemedicine and health and wellness centres.
However, shortages of doctors in far-flung areas, lack of mental health awareness, and inadequate geriatric care continue to pain me.

From agriculture to horticulture— Towards economic self-reliance

In 1951, horticulture was limited to 792 hectares. Today, it has expanded to 2,20,706 hectares with apples, kiwis, cherries, and medicinal herbs exported for over ₹4,000 crore annually, earning me the title “Fruit State.”
Still, climate change, declining fruit quality, and market volatility threaten our farmers’ future.
Solutions lie in scientific research, organic farming, and improved storage infrastructure.

Economic self-reliance a distant horizon

I am a small state with big dreams. In 2024–25, my total budget is ₹58,444 crore with over ₹7,000 crore in tax revenue, ₹1,000 crore from hydropower, and ₹9,000+ crore in planned expenditure.
However, my debt has exceeded ₹50,000 crore, and with dwindling central aid and mounting interest, the burden weighs heavy on me.

Environment: The soul of my existence

With the Green State Mission, solar energy, and e-vehicle policies, I’m moving towards a greener future.
But melting glaciers, deforestation, and vanishing water sources haunt me. My beauty can survive only if my ecological balance is preserved.

Youth and women — My future strength

Schemes like the CM Self Employment Scheme and Indira Gandhi Nari Samman Yojana are empowering youth and women.
What I need now are digital hubs in every village, entrepreneurship in every home, and safety for every daughter.

77th anniversary—A milestone for renewed resolve

April 15, 2025, is not just a date… It’s a call from my soul
“Let’s elevate Himachal once again, but stay rooted in our values.”
Let’s pledge once more —
To make every village smart,
To empower every youth with skills,
To make every woman self-reliant,
And to turn every citizen into a guardian of the environment.

I am Himachal…
I have battled cold, snow, and storms,
Yet I have always risen—stronger each time.
My soldiers have guarded borders,
My farmers have turned soil into gold,
My youth have shaped tomorrow with innovation.

I am built of emotions,
Moulded from aspirations,
And as steadfast as the Himalayas.
Jai Himachal, Jai Bharat!
