The revered Mata Shri Baglamukhi Devi Temple Trust in Bankhandi, Kangra, became the center of devotion and tradition this week as a historic spiritual ceremony unfolded under the divine blessings of Mahamaya Mahavidya Maa Baglamukhi Ji.

In the presence of trustees, priests, saints, villagers, and devotees from far and wide, Mahant Rajat Giri Ji, Peethadhipati and temple head, formally appointed his son Deven Giri as his disciple (chela), continuing the sacred lineage of spiritual leadership at one of Himachal Pradesh’s most ancient temples.

A Ceremony Rooted in Tradition

The appointment of Deven Giri was not merely a ritual but a reaffirmation of centuries-old traditions upheld by the temple. The ceremony was conducted in the presence of members of the Dashnam Shri Panch Bhekh Gosaiyan (Register No. 112, All India), ensuring that the spiritual succession was recognized and blessed by the wider community of saints and mahants across the country.

The event began with prayers to Maa Baglamukhi, invoking her eternal blessings for strength, wisdom, and protection. Mahant Rajat Giri Ji, himself the disciple of the late Mahant Shri Devi Giri and grandson-disciple of the late Mahant Shri Shanti Giri, emphasized the importance of continuity in spiritual leadership. “This temple is not just a place of worship; it is a living tradition. By appointing Deven Giri as my disciple, we ensure that the flame of devotion and service continues to burn brightly,” he said.

Devotees Gather in Large Numbers

The ceremony drew a large gathering of devotees, villagers, and pilgrims from distant regions. The temple courtyard was filled with chants, hymns, and the fragrance of incense as people came together to witness the sacred moment. Trustees, Brahmin priests, Acharyas, and respected elders of the village participated actively, offering blessings to the newly appointed disciple.

For many devotees, the event was a rare opportunity to witness the continuation of a spiritual lineage that has guided the temple for generations. “We feel blessed to be part of this historic occasion. Maa Baglamukhi’s grace is upon all of us today,” said one devotee, his eyes brimming with emotion.

Honoring the Legacy of Past Mahants

The ceremony also paid homage to the late Mahants who had served the temple with devotion and discipline. After the appointment, Mahant Rajat Giri Ji, along with other saints and devotees, visited the samadhis (memorial shrines) of the late Mahant Shri Devi Giri and Mahant Shri Shanti Giri. Special prayers were offered, seeking their blessings for the future of the temple and its devotees.

This act of remembrance underscored the temple’s deep respect for its spiritual ancestors. “Our strength lies in the blessings of those who came before us. Their guidance continues to illuminate our path,” said a senior trustee.

The Grand Mahayajna

Following the appointment and homage rituals, a Mahayajna (grand fire sacrifice) was performed. Priests chanted Vedic mantras, invoking divine energies for peace, prosperity, and spiritual upliftment. The yajna symbolized purification and renewal, marking the beginning of a new chapter in the temple’s journey.

The sight of flames rising amidst chants created a powerful atmosphere of devotion. Devotees participated by offering ahutis (sacred offerings) into the fire, each act symbolizing surrender to the divine will of Maa Baglamukhi.

Hospitality and Community Spirit

True to the temple’s tradition of service, elaborate arrangements were made for the visiting saints, mahants, and devotees. A grand feast (bhandara) was organized, where everyone—regardless of status or background—was served food with love and respect. Pilgrims from distant villages expressed gratitude for the hospitality, noting that such arrangements reflected the temple’s commitment to community and inclusivity.

“The food was not just nourishment; it was prasad, blessed by Maa Baglamukhi herself,” said a devotee from Mandi district, who had traveled overnight to attend the ceremony.

The Spiritual Significance of Baglamukhi Devi

Maa Baglamukhi, one of the ten Mahavidyas in Hindu tradition, is revered as the goddess of power, victory, and protection. Devotees believe that her blessings can silence negativity, overcome obstacles, and grant success in both spiritual and worldly pursuits. The temple at Bankhandi has long been a center of Baglamukhi worship, attracting pilgrims from across India.

The appointment of a new disciple ensures that the temple continues to serve as a beacon of faith. “Baglamukhi Mata’s blessings are eternal. With Deven Giri stepping into this sacred path, the temple’s spiritual energy will only grow stronger,” said an Acharya present at the event.

A Message of Continuity and Blessings

In his concluding address, Mahant Rajat Giri Ji expressed gratitude to all who attended and blessed the occasion. “This temple belongs to every devotee. With Maa Baglamukhi’s grace, may her blessings remain upon all of you. May our community continue to thrive in devotion and unity,” he said.

The newly appointed disciple, Deven Giri, humbly accepted the blessings of saints, trustees, and devotees. “I will dedicate myself to serving Maa Baglamukhi and the temple family. With your guidance and blessings, I will walk this path with sincerity,” he said, marking the beginning of his spiritual journey.

Conclusion

The ceremony at the Mata Shri Baglamukhi Devi Temple Trust, Bankhandi, was more than a ritual—it was a reaffirmation of faith, tradition, and community spirit. By appointing Deven Giri as his disciple, Mahant Rajat Giri Ji ensured that the temple’s spiritual lineage remains strong and vibrant.

As devotees departed after receiving blessings and partaking in the sacred feast, the atmosphere remained charged with devotion. The collective prayer was simple yet profound: May Maa Baglamukhi’s eternal grace continue to shine upon all devotees, guiding them through life’s challenges with strength and wisdom.
