Mandi
Mountain cyclist Jaspreet Pal has been appointed as Mandi’s first Bicycle Mayor by BYCS, an Amsterdam-based organisation leading the global Bicycle Mayor Network. With over 33,000 kilometres of cycling and a cumulative elevation gain of 750,000 metres, Pal’s journey reflects years of endurance across some of the Himalayas’ toughest routes.
His expeditions include Sach Pass, Kunzum Pass, Baralacha La, Jalori Jot, Shinkula and Chanshal, strengthening his belief that cycling can serve a wider social purpose. A defining moment came in 2024, when Pal cycled 640 kilometres from Shimla to Tashigang, the world’s highest polling station at 15,256 feet, to promote voter awareness. Recognised for his efforts, he was appointed State Election Icon of Himachal Pradesh by the Election Commission of India.
As Bicycle Mayor, Pal aims to engage schools, colleges, youth groups and rural communities, encouraging families and first-time riders to embrace cycling. His campaign, “Pedal to Heal Himalayas”, focuses on environmental protection, healthier lifestyles and sustainable mobility. He also hopes to make cycling more accessible to children from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.
Through BYCS’s international platform, Pal plans to collaborate with cycling groups, educational institutions and local authorities to expand cycling culture across Himachal Pradesh. For him, success will be measured not just in kilometres ridden, but in inspiring communities to unite around health, empowerment and environmental responsibility.
