Mandi (Munish Sood)
Despite opposition from a few social organisations in the town, Mandi Sadar BJP MLA Anil Sharma is moving forward with the construction of an indoor stadium at Paddal Ground under the Central Government’s Khelo India campaign.
Speaking at a press conference, Sharma emphasised the project’s importance in enhancing sports infrastructure and promoting Mandi as a hub for national and international indoor sports events.
The MLA highlighted that the design for the stadium has been finalised and the detailed project report (DPR), estimated at Rs 28-30 crore, will soon be submitted to the Central Government for approval.
The project is expected to receive Rs 20-22 crore in funding from the Central Government, with the remaining amount to be sourced through the State Government.
Opposition from local groups
Certain social organisations in Mandi have voiced concerns about the project, citing its potential impact on the town’s traditional culture and public spaces.
They argue that Paddal Ground, a central venue for local festivals and fairs, may lose its significance once transformed into a modern indoor sports facility.
However, Anil Sharma dismissed these concerns, asserting that the stadium will not only provide world-class sports infrastructure but also bring economic and social benefits to the region.
“This project is a part of the Khelo India campaign, which aims to nurture young talent and elevate sports at the grassroots level. It is essential for Mandi’s development,” Sharma said.
Stadium to feature cutting-edge facilities
The proposed indoor stadium will feature two floors and host facilities for multiple sports, including 12 table tennis tables, a 10-metre shooting range, four squash courts, judo and boxing courts, 12 badminton courts and three volleyball courts.
The MLA assured that the stadium would be equipped to host international-level competitions, positioning Mandi on the global sports map.
Preliminary work already completed
Sharma stated that the land for the project has already been allocated to the Sports Department, and soil testing has been completed.
Due to budget constraints faced by the State Government, Sharma allocated Rs 15 lakh from the MLA fund to initiate these tasks.
In response to criticism, Sharma emphasised the long-term benefits of the project, particularly for the youth of Mandi.
“This stadium will inspire the next generation to pursue sports and bring laurels to the region. It is a step towards progress, and while opposition is expected, the larger good of the town must take precedence,” he added.
The MLA plans to meet with Central leadership soon to expedite budget approval, ensuring the timely execution of the project.
