As heavy snowfall blankets Himachal Pradesh, disrupting daily life and cutting off power supply in remote areas, electricity department employees have emerged as true unsung heroes. Braving harsh weather conditions, heavy snow and treacherous terrain, these workers are tirelessly restoring power to affected regions.
In Lahaul-Spiti’s Kaza, Kesang, Akshay Samkaria and Manoj from the ESD-Kaza field team exemplified this dedication. Facing sub-zero temperatures and several feet of snow, they set out on foot to repair damaged transformers and power lines in E-Section Kaza, ensuring warmth and light returned to the snowbound community.
Similar scenes are unfolding across the higher reaches of Himachal where teams climb poles and traverse several kilometres on foot to restore electricity. Shimla, Narkanda and Kufri are among the areas affected in Shimla district, with heavy snowfall rendering roads impassable.
Despite the odds, most areas have regained electricity, thanks to these workers’ unyielding efforts. However, remote regions in Lahaul-Spiti continue to face challenges due to extensive snowfall, with up to four feet reported in some villages.
“As alerts for more snowfall, storms and cold waves persist, the efforts of these field teams are vital for restoring normalcy. They remind us of the often-overlooked contributions of those who work behind the scenes, battling nature’s fury to keep the state running,” says Anuja Chandel, a resident of Sanjauli in Shimla.
