Dharamshala: BJP MLA Satpal Singh Satti made a scathing observation during a discussion on corruption under Rule 67 in the Himachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly on Wednesday. He highlighted growing concerns about allegations of bribery involving a few IAS (Indian Administrative Services) officers, bringing disrepute to the prestigious administrative cadre.

Satti remarked, “It’s unfortunate that we are repeatedly hearing about a few IAS-level officers openly demanding bribes. People say that if anyone approaches them for work, they are bluntly asked to bring favors in return for their tasks to be completed.”

He expressed concern over the deteriorating ethical standards, emphasizing the mockery politics faces from the business community. “Businessmen laugh at us, saying that we politicians endlessly fight with each other, but the outcomes remain zero. This is disheartening for both the political class and society.”

Calling for collective accountability, Satti urged both ruling and opposition lawmakers to address pressing issues like corruption and drug abuse with sincerity and urgency. He appealed to the young generation to engage positively with politics despite prevailing cynicism.

“No one from today’s younger generation aspires to enter politics anymore. They see us as part of the problem, but it’s not entirely true. While a few individuals tarnish our reputation, we need to show that many of us still work for the greater good,” Satti remarked.

The MLA also pointed out the emotional toll of witnessing such deteriorating standards. Referring to Kamlesh Kumari, the first-time MLA and wife of Chief Minister Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu, he said, “Even the Chief Minister’s wife sits in this House with tears in her eyes while laughing at the state of affairs. This shows how grave the situation has become.”

Satti concluded by calling on the House to rise above personal interests and political divides. “Let us work together and fight for a cause that matters to the people of Himachal. We must restore trust in politics and governance,” he said, urging a unified effort to uphold the integrity of both politics and public service.
