Indian-origin astronaut Sunita Williams safely landed on Earth this morning after a grueling nine-month mission aboard the International Space Station (ISS).

As she stepped onto ground, her family expressed their emotions, saying, “No matter how far she goes, India remains a part of her. Even in space, her heart beat for India.”

Spiritual tribute to Maha Kumbh from space

While orbiting Earth, Sunita Williams found a way to stay connected to her roots. From the ISS, she captured stunning images of the Maha Kumbh, the world’s largest religious gathering, held in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh.

While the entire planet awaited her return, she spent moments gazing at this grand festival from space, absorbing the spiritual energy that unites millions.

She later shared these images with her family, especially her sister Falguni Pandya, as a personal tribute to India’s vibrant culture. “Watching the Maha Kumbh from space was an unforgettable experience. It felt like witnessing a celestial celebration of faith and unity,” she said upon landing.

India welcomes back its daughter

Sunita Williams’ return was warmly celebrated by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), which recognised her incredible contribution to space exploration.

In a statement, ISRO called her an inspiration to young Indian minds and expressed hope that her expertise would contribute to India’s growing space ambitions.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also congratulated Sunita Williams, referring to her as “India’s daughter” and acknowledging her deep-rooted connection to the country. “Her journey is a testament to human resilience, and her love for India makes us proud,” he said.

Deep-rooted love for India

Sunita Williams has always kept India close to her heart. On her previous space missions, she carried a copy of the Bhagavad Gita, an idol of Lord Ganesha and the Indian tricolour flag with her.

Even during her latest mission, she frequently spoke about her admiration for India’s advancements and cultural heritage.

Speaking about her time aboard the ISS, she recalled how she would often look for India from space. “Every time I passed over the subcontinent, I felt a deep emotional connection. Seeing the Himalayas, the rivers and the vast landscapes reminded me of my roots,” she shared.

With India making significant strides in space exploration under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, there is growing speculation that Sunita Williams could play a crucial role in mentoring future Indian astronauts or collaborating with ISRO’s Gaganyaan mission.
