Himachal Pradesh is set to make a significant leap in cancer care with the upcoming launch of the state’s first PET scan facility at AIIMS-Bilaspur.
The positron emission tomography (PET) scan machine has already arrived and preparations are underway to operationalise the service by February 2025. The facility aims to provide affordable cancer diagnostics, relieving patients from travelling to PGIMER-Chandigarh or private hospitals.
Known for its superior results compared to MRI in detecting early stage cancer, PET scans help pinpoint tumour locations and identify their biological causes, aiding precise treatment.
Private hospitals charge between Rs 10,000 and Rs 25,000 for a single PET scan, while PGIMER-Chandigarh offers it at Rs 8,500, excluding additional costs for required injections. AIIMS-Bilaspur plans to offer this service at lower rates, making it accessible to a broader population.
The AIIMS management has completed the procurement of equipment and the construction of laboratories. Experts at the institute are being trained to handle the advanced technology. Once functional, the facility will not only save patients the expense and hassle of travelling to Chandigarh, but also enhance the early detection and treatment of cancer.
