Art of Living founder Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, a spiritual leader, humanitarian and peace envoy who is famous as Gurudev among his followers, will address the United Nations General Assembly on December 21, 2024, marking a historic moment for India as well as his organisation.
The day has been officially designated by the United Nations as World Meditation Day. On the occasion, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, who is also the founder of Transcendental Meditation, will lead a global meditation session, which will be viewed live by millions across the globe. The event, “World Meditates with Gurudev”, will be broadcast live on December 21 at 8 pm (IST).

Global importance of meditation

“The recognition of meditation by the United Nations is a landmark step. Meditation not only benefits mental and physical health but also promotes peace and unity within society,” said Gurudev.
To mark World Meditation Day, a programme on the theme “Meditation for Global Peace and Harmony” will be organised at the United Nations headquarters. Hosted by India’s Permanent Mission to the UN, Gurudev will be the keynote speaker, addressing global leaders, diplomats and UN officials.
Gurudev will discuss the role of meditation in reducing mental stress and resolving global conflicts. The United Nations’ recognition of meditation underscores its potential to address modern challenges like stress, violence and social isolation.

Role in resolving Ayodhya Temple-Babri Masjid dispute

Under Gurudev’s guidance over the past 43 years since he founded Art of Living in 1981, millions of people in more than 180 countries have experienced its profound benefits.
Gurudev’s peacebuilding efforts have yielded impactful results in conflict zones such as Sri Lanka, Iraq, Venezuela and Colombia, where his mediation helped end a 52-year-old conflict. In India, his role in resolving the Ayodhya Ram Temple-Babri Masjid dispute was significant.
Gurudev believes meditation not only provides inner peace but also serves as a bridge to unite societies and nations. His efforts inspire collaboration and sustainable peace among communities and leaders
