DHARAMSHALA: ‘Sukhu bhai Sukhu bhai, 10 guarantiyan kithe payi’ (CM Sukhu, what happened of the 10 poll guarantees) was a slogan that reverberated outside the Himachal Pradesh Vidhan Sabha at Tapovan in Dharamshala as the opposition BJP MLAs entered the House on the opening day of the winter session.
The slogan sounded similar to ‘Joiya mama manda nahin, karamchari ko shunda nahin’ (CM Jai Ram, why don’t you implement the old pension scheme), which became an instant hit among the public and was one of the factors that led to the undoing of the previous BJP regime in the 2022 Assembly elections.
Another slogan that the BJP MLAs, led by leader of opposition Jai Ram Thakur, raised was ‘Sukhu mama shunda nahin, 1,500 koi denda nahin’ (when will women get the promised Rs 1,500 monthly grant?).
When in opposition, Congress MLAs led by Mukesh Agnihotri, then party’s leader in the Assembly, had on several occasions used the ‘Joiya mama manda nahin…’ slogan to counter the previous BJP government led by Jai Ram Thakur. It’s a role reversal now as the BJP has been attacking the Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu-led Congress regime in a similar way.
The BJP MLAs arrived at the Tapovan Vidhan Sabha wearing apron-style placards hanging below their neck with slogans mentioning the unfulfilled guarantees written on it. Some of the slogans read “300 units of free power”, ₹1,500 per month for women”, “Cow dung purchase”, etc.
