Shimla:

The 3rd Himachal Flying Festival and Hospitality Expo-2025 got off to a dramatic start on Saturday (October 25, 2025) when a paragliding pilot lost balance mid-air and crashed during a demonstration flight at Junga near Shimla in Himachal Pradesh, injuring the pilot. The incident occurred shortly after the event’s inauguration, briefly halting proceedings before the festival resumed as scheduled.

The three-day international festival was inaugurated by Naresh Chauhan, principal media adviser to the Chief Minister, in the presence of event organiser Arun Rawat and other dignitaries. Officials said the injured pilot received immediate medical attention and is out of danger.

Despite the early mishap, the event soared ahead with enthusiasm, featuring pilots from seven countries, including top-ranked Chinese pilots, participating in Himachal for the first time. This year’s edition is notable for hosting India’s first combined Paragliding Pre-World Cup and Pre-Asian League Championship, marking a milestone in the state’s efforts to promote international air sports.

Adventure, culture, entrepreneurship come together

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Chauhan said the festival aims to establish Shimla as a world-class adventure tourism destination and make Himachal Pradesh a leading hub for air sports and eco-tourism.
The inauguration also featured a colorful display of Himachali culture, with schoolchildren and local artists performing the traditional Nati dance to welcome participants and guests.

Over 60 micro, small and self-help groups are exhibiting their products at the Hospitality Expo, including organic foods, wellness items, handicrafts, eco-friendly innovations and traditional Himachali goods.

Great Khali to promote fitness among youth

The festival will feature several cultural and interactive events, with folk singer Kuldeep Sharma performing on October 25. On October 26, WWE legend Dalip Singh Rana, popularly known as The Great Khali, will make a special appearance to inspire youth towards fitness, adventure and sportsmanship.

Jointly organised by the Department of Tourism, local administration and the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME), the festival is expected to give a major boost to adventure tourism and local entrepreneurship in the region.
