Shimla: Himachal Pradesh is witnessing an early winter spectacle this year as heavy snowfall has been reported across several high-altitude regions, including Shimla, offering tourists the chance to celebrate a White Christmas. The weather department has also forecasted more snowfall for tomorrow, adding to the festive spirit.
Many tourists have already flocked to Shimla’s Kufri and Narkanda, where they are experiencing the first snowfall of the season. Ramandeep, from Punjab shared his excitement, stating that this is his first trip to the mountains, and he didn’t expect to witness snowfall, making the experience all the more special.
Snow is continuing to fall across high peaks in Shimla, Lahaul-Spiti, Chamba, Kullu, and Mandi districts, with the weather department predicting more snow in seven districts, and light rain in others. Tourists can expect clear weather from December 25 to 26, before another western disturbance brings heavy rain and snow to the region from December 27 to 28.
The state has been eagerly awaiting this winter’s snowfall, which had been delayed, leaving many regions facing drought-like conditions. Rainfall from October 1 to December 22 was 97% below the normal level, leading to a dry spell and crop damage. However, the recent snowfall has brought relief to farmers, gardeners, and tourism operators alike.
Many cities across Himachal have recorded temperatures below freezing, with lakes and streams freezing in the high-altitude areas of Lahaul-Spiti, Kinnaur, and Kullu. The lowest temperatures have been recorded at Samadho (-5.3°C), Kukumseri (-3.7°C), and Kalpa (-2.5°C), while Shimla itself recorded 3.4°C.
With the Christmas season in full swing, the snow-capped landscapes are expected to draw even more tourists, who come hoping to experience the beauty of a traditional White Christmas.
