Shimla: Two young patients from Mandi and Kullu districts succumbed to scrub typhus at Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC) and Hospital in Shimla, raising the death toll due to the disease in the health facility to four.
Senior Medical Superintendent Dr Rahul Rao confirmed the deaths. The deceased included a 17-year-old from Mandi and a 25-year-old from Kullu, both of whom were admitted to the IGMC after their health had worsened a few days ago. Despite efforts by the medical team, their condition deteriorated further, leading to their deaths on Tuesday.

The deaths come after two earlier fatalities, one of an elderly resident from Mandi and another from Panthaghati in Shimla, who also succumbed to the disease.
According to doctors, scrub typhus symptoms include high fever, joint pain, body stiffness or aches, neck infections and swollen lymph nodes under the arms. Health experts urge people to seek immediate medical attention if they experience such symptoms as early diagnosis and treatment are crucial for managing the disease.
Residents are also advised to maintain hygiene and keep their surroundings clean, preventing the growth of grass and weeds near their homes to reduce the risk of contracting scrub typhus.
