Mandi: BJP’s Drang MLA, Puran Chand Thakur, has accused the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) of gross negligence, attributing the ongoing ground collapse above the under-construction tunnel in Dayod village to the authority’s careless handling of the project. During his visit to the affected area on Saturday, Thakur voiced his frustration over the incomplete tunnel work and its adverse impact on local residents.
“NHAI Negligence Behind Ground Sinking”
Thakur alleged that NHAI abandoned the tunnel project after completing the excavation phase, neglecting crucial concreting work, which has led to the sinking of the ground above.
“The construction has stalled because contractors haven’t been paid their dues, leading to the suspension of work,” he said. “This sinking ground now poses a significant threat to homes, forcing several families to vacate in fear for their safety,” Thakur added, holding NHAI directly responsible for the crisis.

MLA Warns of Public Outrage
In his address to the media, the Drang MLA cautioned NHAI of an impending public backlash if immediate corrective measures are not implemented. He urged both the central and state governments to take firm action against the highway authority. “If NHAI continues to ignore the public interest, it will soon face the anger of the people,” Thakur warned.
Demands for Investigation and Compensation
Thakur called for a thorough investigation by experts to determine the root cause of the problem and to devise a permanent solution. He also demanded compensation for the affected families, including the allocation of safe land and financial assistance to rebuild their homes. “The central government must intervene and ensure that families are relocated to safe areas and provided the necessary support to rebuild their lives,” he stated.
NHAI Denies Allegations
Responding to the accusations, NHAI Project Director Varun Chari denied any negligence, asserting that there is no evidence linking the tunnel construction to the ground collapse. “Our investigations have not found any proof that the pit in Dayod village is related to the tunnel work. The ground has collapsed due to other factors,” Chari explained.
He further assured that NHAI is fully committed to addressing the situation and has already begun efforts to fill the pit. “We are aware of the concerns, and our team is on the ground, working to bring the situation under control,” Chari said, rejecting claims that NHAI’s actions have been negligent.
