The Press Information Bureau (PIB), Shimla, on Wednesday organised a district-level media workshop, ‘Vartalap’, in Mandi, bringing together journalists, senior government officials and subject experts to deliberate on strengthening information dissemination, combating misinformation and enhancing collaboration between the media and the administration.
The workshop, organised on the theme “Improving Information Dissemination,” focused on ensuring timely and credible communication of public welfare initiatives, addressing the challenge of fake news and promoting responsible journalism in the digital age.
Addressing the gathering as the Chief Guest, Mandi Deputy Commissioner Apoorv Devgan (IAS) underscored the importance of disseminating authentic information to strengthen transparent governance and ensure that government welfare schemes reach the last mile. He described the media as an indispensable bridge between the government and the public and appreciated PIB for creating a platform that fosters constructive dialogue and institutional coordination.
Speaking on the growing role of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Devgan said understanding its capabilities has become essential in today’s rapidly evolving technological landscape. While AI has immense potential to transform governance and communication, he cautioned that its use must be guided by responsibility and ethical considerations. Referring to the increasing pressure to publish information quickly, he observed that speed should never come at the cost of accuracy and credibility, urging media professionals to prioritise verification before dissemination.
He also highlighted that PIB remains a credible and valuable source of information, particularly for civil services aspirants and professionals seeking authentic government information.
Guest of Honour Superintendent of Police Vinod Kumar (IPS) outlined the district police’s anti-drug campaign, describing drug abuse as a serious social concern. He emphasised that the success of the campaign depends on collective efforts and called upon the media to play a proactive role in spreading awareness, especially among the youth. He also highlighted various initiatives undertaken by the police to strengthen law and order across the district.
The workshop commenced with a welcome address by PIB Shimla Assistant Director Sanjeev Kumar Sharma, who outlined the objectives of the ‘Vartalap’ initiative and stressed the need for close coordination between government agencies and the media to ensure the dissemination of timely, factual and reliable information. He also felicitated the Chief Guest with a memento.
The event featured a series of technical sessions by experts on subjects of public importance.
Professor Varun Dutt of IIT Mandi delivered an insightful presentation on the challenges posed by fake news in the digital era, explaining practical techniques for identifying misinformation, the importance of fact-checking and the responsibility of media professionals in safeguarding public trust.
Ajay Badrel, District Programme Officer (ICDS), highlighted key Central and State Government schemes aimed at women’s empowerment and child welfare while sharing the district’s achievements in their implementation.
Pooja Gautam, Subject Matter Specialist with the Department of Horticulture, discussed the sector’s contribution to Himachal Pradesh’s economy and elaborated on government initiatives and technological innovations designed to benefit farmers and orchardists.
In another technical session, Praveen Bhardwaj, In-charge of the Emergency Operations Centre under the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), spoke on disaster preparedness, risk reduction strategies, emergency response mechanisms and innovations in disaster management in hilly regions.
Renowned Pahari miniature artist Rajesh Kumar highlighted Mandi’s rich cultural heritage and shared insights into the history, significance and preservation of the traditional Kalam Chitrakari art form.
The workshop concluded with a formal vote of thanks by Sunil Kumar, In-charge of the Central Bureau of Communication, Mandi, who expressed gratitude to the dignitaries, speakers, media representatives and participants for contributing to the success of the programme.
