SHIMLA: Lance Naik Manish Kumar, a resident of Baraban village in the Nahan subdivision of Himachal Pradesh’s Sirmaur district, attained martyrdom in a landslide in North Sikkim.
The 27-year-old soldier, who was serving with the 3 Dogra Regiment, lost his life around 7.30 pm on Sunday (June 1, 2025) evening while on duty near a place called Chhatte.
The confirmation of his martyrdom came from Major Deepak Dhawan (retd), Deputy Director of the Sainik Welfare Board, who informed that the region had been facing severe floods and landslides in recent days. Manish was involved in disaster relief and monitoring operations at the time of the incident.
“Manish made the supreme sacrifice while serving the nation amidst extremely challenging conditions,” Major Dhawan said, adding that there are fears of other casualties among the deployed troops.
Born on January 15, 1998, Manish Kumar joined the Army in 2016. He had married only three months ago. His untimely demise has sent a wave of grief across the region.
Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu expressed deep sorrow over the incident, writing in a condolence message on social media: “The news of the martyrdom of Lance Naik Manish Kumar, a resident of Baraban village in Nahan subdivision of Sirmaur district, during duty in Sikkim is extremely saddening. I pray to the Almighty to grant peace to the departed soul and strength to the bereaved family to bear this irreparable loss. My heartfelt condolences are with the grieving family.”
Manish is survived by his wife Tanu Devi, mother Kiran Bala and father Joginder Singh. The family and the local community have been devastated by the news, and preparations are underway to receive his mortal remains, which are expected to arrive by Monday evening or Tuesday.
