DHARAMSHALA: Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, fresh from his Maldives vacation, headed straight to the sacred Mahakumbh in Prayagraj for a holy dip.
Accompanied by his advisers, family members and key aides, CM Sukhu took a flight from Delhi to Prayagraj on Tuesday morning to participate in the religious gathering. Later in the evening, he is scheduled to return to Chandigarh.
According to sources, CM Sukhu, along with his family and close associates, including MLAs Kamlesh Thakur and media adviser Naresh Chauhan, visited the Maldives on February 19 for a private trip.
Upon his return, the Chief Minister wasted no time in setting out for Prayagraj to take part in the Mahakumbh ritual bathing. He boarded a flight from Delhi at 10.30 am and itinerary includes an overnight stay in Chandigarh before resuming official engagements.
Jai Ram Thakur’s jibe at CM’s timing
Leader of Opposition and former Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur has taken a dig at Sukhu’s sudden decision to visit the Mahakumbh.
Speaking in Mandi, he remarked that while devotees from across the country had been flocking to Prayagraj for this once-in-144-years event, CM Sukhu seemed to have realised its significance only after his luxury getaway.
“While the entire world is gathering at Mahakumbh for this rare and auspicious occasion, CM Sukhu prioritised his Maldives trip. Perhaps someone has now guided him in the right direction, and that’s why he has decided to take the holy dip. Better late than never — I welcome this move,” Jai Ram Thakur stated.
Criticism over lack of government efforts for pilgrims
The BJP leader also criticised the Congress government for its alleged failure to facilitate Mahakumbh travel for Himachal devotees.
He pointed out that while several states had made extensive arrangements for their pilgrims, the Himachal Pradesh government had not even set up a dedicated cell for assistance.
“It is unfortunate that those who call themselves ‘Sanatani’ have turned their backs on providing facilities for devotees. Many opposition leaders kept away from Mahakumbh, while some took the dip out of faith, others out of compulsion. The Himachal government has done nothing to ease the pilgrimage for its people,” Jai Ram Thakur added.
