The Newz Radar
Himachal PWD Minister Vikramadity Singh speaks on a host of issues in a freewheeling interview with Munish Sood of The Newz Radar. His father and mother having represented the Mandi Lok Sabha constituency thrice each, the young and dynamic Congress leader is being seen as a frontrunner to take on Bollywood actress and BJP candidate Kangana Ranaut in Mandi. Excerpts:
Q. Ex-CM Jai Ram Thakur alleges that Vikramaditya Singh and his mother Pratibha Singh incited the rebel Congress MLAs against CM Sukhu?
A. These are baseless remarks. The MLAs are independent and capable individuals who can make their own decisions. While I did meet them officially to discuss their grievances, the decisions they’ve made are their own, unrelated to any rumours spread by the BJP. Our meeting had no political agenda.
Q. Are your recent posts targeting BJP candidate Kangana Ranaut an indication that you will contest against her in Mandi?
A. My posts aren’t specifically targeting anyone. During my visit to Mandi, I acknowledged Kangana Ranaut’s contributions to Bollywood and Himachal, but expressed concern about her absence during the 2023 floods. Accountability in elections should focus on issues, not individuals. The election will revolve around the government’s role during the 2023 rain disaster and overall development.
Q. If directed by the high command, will you be ready for the contest?
A. While I never actively sought the ticket from Mandi, I am committed to serving the party’s interests. My past record of public life speaks for itself, and I’ll continue to fulfill any responsibility entrusted to me in the future too. My posts aren’t indicative of my electoral plans. Our focus should be on local development issues, not personal rivalries.
Q. How right is it to target Kangana over her past controversial remarks?
A. I haven’t singled out anyone in my posts. I’ve discussed the importance of respecting cultural sensitivities in Himachal. If individuals choose to comment on such matters, they must be prepared to address public concerns. But these issues aren’t central to state politics.
Q. Some feel the Himachal Congress lacks aggression compared to the BJP?
A. We will be assertive on relevant issues, but within the bounds of respectful discourse. Sensationalising issues isn’t our approach. We uphold our party’s ideology and focus on substantive matters.
Q. Is Kangana viewed as a formidable candidate by the Himachal Congress?
A. She’s a candidate, like any other. While her star power is acknowledged, electoral success depends on credibility and policies, not celebrity status.
Q. How do you assess the influence of star power in politics?
A. Celebrity appeal may draw crowds, but political success relies on substantive engagement. Public scrutiny extends beyond stardom to include issues like accountability and commitment to public service.
Q. Do you think star power can overshadow grassroots leaders in Mandi?
A. While stars may attract attention, genuine connections with the public and the track record of service are crucial in politics. Himachal’s electorate is discerning and values substance over spectacle.
Q. The Mandi seat was previously considered one-sided. Do you think your potential candidacy can change the perception?
A. Every election demands dedication and seriousness. We’re focused on local issues and past achievements, not media rhetoric. The people of Mandi recognise our efforts and will vote accordingly.
Q. How united is the Congress government currently? Have issues with the Chief Minister been resolved?
A. We have resolved differences for the greater good. Democratic organisations like the Congress naturally accommodate diverse viewpoints. Our unity stems from a shared goal of advancing the party’s agenda and serving the people.
