Bharmour–Pangi MLA Dr. Janak Raj has expressed serious concern over the proposed imposition of Green Tax in Bharmaur and urged the administration to immediately reconsider the decision. On Thursday, he conveyed his objections through the ADM Bharmaur to the Deputy Commissioner Chamba and also wrote to the Chairman of the Special Area Development Authority (SADA), highlighting the sentiments of local residents, traders, taxi operators, hoteliers, and social organizations.
Dr. Raj stated that while he fully supports environmental protection, cleanliness, and balanced development of Bharmaur, the region’s religious, cultural, and ecological sensitivity requires equal consideration of the social and economic interests of local communities. He suggested that if SADA requires additional financial resources for development projects, funds should be sought from the state and central governments, CSR initiatives, and other alternative sources rather than burdening the tribal population with new levies.
The MLA emphasized that before introducing any new tax or fee in tribal areas, its social and economic impact must be thoroughly assessed. He demanded that the administration organize a joint meeting with panchayat representatives, trade associations, taxi unions, hoteliers, tourism stakeholders, social organizations, and public representatives to hold detailed discussions on the matter.
Dr. Raj further insisted that complete transparency be maintained regarding the revenue generated from the proposed Green Tax, its utilization, and accountability. He called for a solution that ensures development projects continue without imposing unnecessary financial burdens on local residents, pilgrims, and tourists.
Expressing confidence, Dr. Raj said the administration will not view the issue merely from a revenue-collection perspective but will prioritize public sentiment, local realities, and public interest while making an appropriate decision that respects the feelings of the people.
