Senior writers from Sundernagar recognised for their work in historical fiction and children’s literature

KULLU: Senior Himachali writers Gangaram Rahi and Pawan Chauhan have been conferred the Gurukul Samman 2026 by Gurukul Bahumukhi Shiksha Sansthan, Kullu, in recognition of their significant contribution to Hindi literature.
Rahi was honoured for his contribution to historical fiction, while Chauhan received the honour for his sustained work in children’s literature. Both writers, who have their roots in Sundernagar, have made a distinct contribution to the literary landscape of Himachal Pradesh through their diverse body of work.
Rahi has published 19 novels and more than 400 short stories. His writing is particularly noted for bringing historical and social themes alive through engaging narratives and a strong human dimension. His acclaimed novel Bhairon Kabhi Nahin Mara and other works have earned him several national and state-level literary honours. He is regarded as one of Himachal’s prolific writers of historical and socially themed novels.
Chauhan has made his mark across poetry, short stories, children’s stories and feature writing. Eleven of his books, including works on children’s literature, heritage and tourism, as well as edited volumes, have been published. His writings have found a place in school and university curricula and have also been translated into several Indian languages. His contribution to children’s literature and other genres has earned him several honours.
The recognition of the two writers has been welcomed by members of the literary community, who described the honour as a moment of pride for Sundernagar as well as Himachal Pradesh’s rich literary tradition.
