The Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) celebrated its 43rd Foundation Day at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Cricket Stadium, Amter, with officials, players, coaches and members of the cricket fraternity coming together to mark the association’s long journey.
The programme was attended by former HPCA secretary and executive member Sumeet Sharma as the chief guest. Addressing the gathering, Sharma recalled the development of cricket in Himachal Pradesh and highlighted the role played by former HPCA president Anurag Thakur in strengthening the association’s infrastructure.
According to Sharma, the association, established in 1984, witnessed significant expansion after Anurag Thakur took charge in 2000. He highlighted the development of major cricket facilities, including the international cricket stadium in Dharamshala, along with the grounds at Luhnu in Bilaspur and Amter in Nadaun.
Sharma said the expansion was not limited to infrastructure, but also contributed to creating a larger pool of players and strengthening the support staff associated with the sport. Himachal has subsequently hosted several international matches in Dharamshala, while the Amter ground continues to host national-level cricket fixtures.
The contribution of IPL Chairman Arun Dhumal to the development of cricket in Himachal Pradesh was also acknowledged during the programme.
The event also reflected on the association’s early years, with Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association playing its first Ranji Trophy match in 1985. District Cricket Association president Prem Thakur, who was part of the team as a player, recalled his association with that phase of Himachal cricket.
The 43rd Foundation Day programme also focused on the achievements of Himachal players, development of cricket facilities and efforts to provide opportunities to emerging talent.
As part of the celebrations, curator Sanjay Thakur ‘Tinka’ and the ground staff were felicitated for their contribution to maintaining the cricket ground and supporting matches and tournaments.
District president Prem Thakur welcomed the chief guest and highlighted the association’s 43-year journey, describing it as a period marked by the development of cricket infrastructure, opportunities for players and the continued growth of the sport across Himachal Pradesh.
Officials, former and current players, coaches and other members of the cricket fraternity were present at the programme.
