A heartbreaking incident has been reported from Mehla, Chamba, during the ongoing Manimahesh Yatra. In the early hours around 3 AM, a massive boulder suddenly fell from the hillside onto a Thar vehicle carrying pilgrims. The impact shattered the vehicle’s sunroof and tragically claimed the life of a passenger on the spot.
The deceased has been identified as Makhan Singh (40), son of Shravan Singh, resident of village Malian, Post Office Garhdiwal, Tehsil Garhdiwal, District Hoshiarpur, Punjab.
According to initial reports, the Thar was passing through the Mehla stretch when the stone struck directly on its roof, leaving the vehicle badly damaged. Police have registered a case and begun investigations to determine whether the rockfall was a natural occurrence or if other factors were involved.
This accident once again highlights the risks of traveling on fragile mountain routes during the pilgrimage season. The administration has assured that the actual cause will be established after a detailed inquiry.
