Mandi architect Vaidya receives lifetime achievement award from Indian Concrete Institute

Mandi: RP Vaidya, a Mandi-based architect, has been honoured with a lifetime achievement award by the Indian Concrete Institute (ICI) for his accomplishments in the field of architecture.
The award was received on behalf of Vaidya by his son, Amit Vaidya, during a ceremony held in Shimla. Currently undergoing treatment at a hospital, RP Vaidya has been recognised by the ICI, a non-profit organisation dedicated to promoting knowledge about concrete technology, construction advancement and addressing the research needs of concrete.
ICI chairman VPS Jaswal stated that esteemed architects and engineers in the industry, known for designing prominent structures and projects, were chosen for various awards. He mentioned that these awards include the Lifetime Achievement Trophy, Young Technologist Award, and more.
Nand Lal Chandel, the vice-chairman of ICI, shared details about the life and career of architect Rajinder Pal Vaidya on the occasion. Born on November 10, 1939, in Mandi, Vaidya joined the renowned architectural firm M/s Kothari and Associates after completing his bachelor’s degree in architecture in 1966.
In 1968, he joined the Municipal Corporation in Shimla as an architect and began his career in the government services of Himachal Pradesh. In 1971, he contributed to the field of architectural design at the Himachal Pradesh State Electricity Board (HPSEB). Putting more than 27 years in the HPSEB, he designed several historic projects, earning acclaim.
During his tenure at the HPSEB, Vaidya designed various projects, including the IAS Colony in Panthaghati, colonies for the Bhaba Hydro Power Project at Bhabanagar in Kinnaur and projects near the Nathpa Dam for HPSEB engineers.
He also designed relaxation homes for the Sarabhai Colony for the Larji Hydro Electric Project, relaxation homes in Rampur for the Nathpa Jhakri Hydro-Power Project, and colonies in Dalhousie, Chamba, Palampur, Dharamshala, Mandi, Manali, Nalagarh, Jawalamukhi and Nurpur, among others. Additionally, he contributed designs for the headquarters building of HPSEB at Kumar House in Shimla, and for NHPC in Dalhousie, including Canadian Cottages in Dalhousie and colonies in Banikhet, Dalhousie, Choura and more.
Known for his unique architectural style, Vaidya’s designs always stood out, making his mark distinct from others. After actively contributing to the field of architecture for over 52 years in both public and private sectors, he retired from active life in 2022.
