Himachal Pradesh capital Shimla, famous as the Queen of Hills, is experiencing an unusual weather phenomenon this December.
While the plains of Himachal Pradesh and other states have been shivering under freezing temperatures, Shimla is witnessing surprisingly warm nights. The city’s minimum temperature has climbed to 12.2°C, making it the warmest place in the state this winter.
On Sunday night, Shimla recorded a minimum temperature of 12.2°C, significantly higher than Una, the state’s hottest district, where the temperature dipped to -0.7°C. The minimum temperature in Shimla has risen by 3°C in just two days, from 9°C on Friday night to 12.2°C on Sunday night. This is a stark contrast to the chilly weather prevailing in the lower hills and plains.
Scientists attribute it to clear skies in day
According to the Meteorological Department, the unusually high minimum temperature in Shimla can be attributed to clear skies and consistent sunshine during the day. The absence of cloud cover allows the region to retain heat, leading to warmer nights.
Conversely, in the plains and lower hills, fog and lack of direct sunlight have intensified the cold. The presence of fog traps cooler air near the ground, contributing to the sharp drop in temperature.
The warm nights in Shimla have surprised locals and tourists alike. While the city remains a favourite destination for holidaymakers, the absence of the usual biting cold might alter the winter experience many seek in the hills.
Weather expected to remain clear till December 22
Several popular tourist spots and towns in Himachal recorded much lower minimum temperatures compared to Shimla. Kufri recorded the minimum of 10.5°C, Dharamshala 4°C, Palampur 3.5°C, Manali: 3.5°C, Mandi 1.9°C, Bilaspur 2.4°C and Hamirpur: 0.7°C.
In contrast, high-altitude regions like Tabo and Kukumseri reported sub-zero temperatures, with Tabo plunging to -10.6°C and Kukumseri recording -7.1°C.
The weather is expected to remain clear across Himachal Pradesh until December 22, according to the Meteorological Centre in Shimla. A yellow alert has been issued for cold wave conditions in the lower hills and plains until December 20.
