Shimla: Discontented educated unemployed youth of Himachal Pradesh are set to take to the streets of Shimla on Monday (December 16, 2024) to protest the newly introduced Guest Teacher Recruitment Policy.
The Himachal Pradesh Trained Unemployed Union has called for the protest, demanding the immediate withdrawal of the policy.
The protesters will gather outside the Deputy Commissioner’s office in Shimla to voice their dissent.
The Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu-led Congress government, which came to power promising regular jobs, has drawn criticism for its alleged failure to deliver on its pre-election commitments. Instead of providing regular employment, a part of the recruitments under the current administration have been on an outsourcing or temporary basis.
Recently, the Sukhu Cabinet approved a policy for hiring guest teachers on a period-based payment system, triggering widespread dissatisfaction among unemployed youth in the state.
As per the policy approved on December 12, guest teachers will be paid between Rs 200 and Rs 500 per class. This decision has been perceived as a betrayal by the unemployed, who claim it allegedly undermined their demand for stable government jobs.
The protesters have planned another major demonstration on December 19 in Dharamshala during the winter session of the state Assembly at Tapovan. They intend to remind the Congress government of its electoral promise to provide one lakh jobs and demand the rollback of the guest teacher recruitment policy.
According to the Himachal Pradesh Trained Unemployed Union, the state has over eight lakh unemployed individuals actively preparing for government jobs. However, the government has allegedly created only a nominal number of regular positions in its two-year tenure. Adding to their frustration, the results of recruitment exams conducted during the previous government’s tenure remain pending.
A representative of the Himachal Pradesh Trained Unemployed Union accused the government of betraying the unemployed youth. “The Congress came to power with promises of permanent jobs, but now it is shifting its responsibilities by offering temporary outsourced jobs. We are prepared for a decisive fight against this injustice,” he said.
