Himachal Pradesh has initiated an innovative solution to tackle the increasing traffic congestion in its popular tourist destinations.

The Himachal Pradesh Traffic Tourist and Railway Police (TTR) have begun using drones to monitor and manage traffic jams on roads leading to major tourist hubs such as Shimla, Manali, Dharamshala and Chamba.

These drones, flying at an altitude of 300-400 metres, provide real-time surveillance of traffic conditions over a 5-km radius. Upon detecting a traffic jam, the drones relay this information to the nearest traffic control room, enabling a swift response by the police to clear the congestion.

According to TTR officials, this new monitoring system aims to improve traffic flow and reduce the duration of jams, especially during the peak tourist season. “Traffic is being monitored with drones at tourist places. Wherever there is a jam, the traffic control room is being informed about it.

So far, investigation has revealed that vehicles coming from outside states to Himachal are causing jams. Tourists are being made aware about the traffic,” stated Narveer Rathore, Additional Superintendent of Police, Traffic, Tourist Railway Police.

Between June 1 and June 23, Shimla alone saw an influx of 1,65,659 vehicles from other states. During the same period, 1,44,807 vehicles travelled from Shimla to Solan, while 1,83,403 vehicles made the journey from Solan to Shimla. The heavy tourist traffic has led to frequent and prolonged traffic jams, significantly impacting both tourists and residents.

The TTR’s drone initiative is controlled from Shimla, where traffic data is analysed and action is coordinated. This high-tech approach not only enhances the efficiency of traffic management but also helps in promptly addressing the bottlenecks caused by the influx of tourist vehicles.

With this proactive measure, the Himachal Pradesh Traffic Tourist and Railway Police hope to alleviate the traffic woes that have been plaguing the region, ensuring a smoother experience for both tourists and locals alike.
