Himachal Pradesh has etched its name in global history by creating a Guinness World Record for the “Largest Handmade Shawl Display at a Single Venue”, reaffirming the state’s deep-rooted handloom legacy and the collective strength of its artisan community.
A remarkable 4,023 handmade shawls, meticulously woven by traditional artisans and women self-help groups (SHGs) from all 12 districts of Himachal Pradesh, were displayed together at a single venue in Shimla. The stunning visual spectacle showcased the diversity of designs, colours and weaving techniques that define Himachali shawls, turning the venue into a living gallery of the state’s textile heritage. The achievement has been officially verified and certified by Guinness World Records.
The record-setting display was organised as part of the ongoing HIM MSME Fest 2026, being hosted by the Himachal Pradesh Department of Industries. Beyond the numbers, the initiative aimed to honour local weavers, highlight traditional craftsmanship and position Himachali shawls as global symbols of sustainable, handmade excellence.
Officials said the record stands as a tribute to the tireless efforts of thousands of weavers — many from remote rural areas — whose skills have been passed down through generations. The initiative also reflects the state government’s sustained focus on artisan welfare, revival of traditional crafts, youth participation in handloom activities, and strengthening the rural economy through MSME-led initiatives.
The Guinness World Records certificate was formally received by Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu in the presence of Industries Minister Harshwardhan Chauhan, along with administrative secretaries and senior government officials.
With this global recognition, Himachal Pradesh has once again drawn international attention to its cultural richness and artistic excellence. The record not only celebrates a historic milestone but also reinforces the state’s identity as a vibrant hub of heritage, creativity and community-driven craftsmanship.
