Being porn star shouldn’t evoke shame’: BJP candidate Kangana Ranaut cites Sunny Leone’s example to defend old comments on Urmila Matondkar

MANDI: Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut, who is contesting the 2024 Lok Sabha elections from Mandi constituency of Himachal Pradesh, has said that being referred to as a porn star shouldn’t evoke shame.
In an interview to a news channel, Kangana’s remarks came in the context to her controversial comments in 2020 against fellow actress Urmila Matondkar whom the Himachal-born celebrity had called a “soft porn star”.
Kangana, who has hogged many a controversy in the past, had then alleged that Urmila hadn’t achieved anything in acting and had survived in Bollywood only because of her image as a “soft porn star”. The comments had come following an altercation between Urmila and Kangana on microblogging site Twitter (now X).
When asked if she would join politics, Kangana had replied that when a “soft porn star” like Urmila could be offered a ticket, even she could get one. Urmila had contested the last Lok Sabha elections on the Congress ticket, but lost. She has since shifted to the Shiv Sena (UBT).
In her latest interview, Kangana delved into the intricacies of her statement, asserting that being labelled a porn star should not elicit shame. Drawing a parallel with Sunny Leone, a former adult content star who is now a Bollywood actor, Kangana underscored the unique societal acceptance of such terms in India while comparing it with global perceptions.
Addressing her remarks about Urmila, Kangana clarified the context, attributing her response to a query regarding her political aspirations. She delineated between various art forms, recognising both sensational and intellectually stimulating genres. Kangana reiterated her commitment to cinema devoid of item numbers, emphasising the depth of her artistic portfolio.
Furthermore, Kangana probed the societal double standard between porn stars and prostitutes, challenging the basis of differing perceptions. She urged for a more nuanced understanding of societal norms and acceptance, questioning the prevailing mindset. Her candid remarks, meanwhile, have reignited debates surrounding freedom of expression, societal perceptions and the evolving landscape of Indian cinema.
