Amidst orange and yellow alerts from the Meteorological Department, Himachal Pradesh has witnessed a change in weather patterns, with snowfall blanketing high mountain ranges and rain lashing lower altitudes.
The peaks of Pangi area in Chamba and tribal districts Lahaul-Spiti and Kinnaur have been draped in fresh layers of snow.
In the aftermath of Friday night’s snowfall, the mercury dipped in the higher reaches of Kullu and other parts.
Keylong and Kukumseri recorded sub-zero temperatures once again, indicative of the grip of cold weather still in these regions.
Despite efforts by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) to restore connectivity, the highway from Shinkula Pass to Sarchu has been blocked again, disrupting vehicular movement. This setback comes after recent efforts to clear these routes, highlighting the challenges posed by unpredictable weather conditions in the mountainous terrain.
The impact of adverse weather isn’t limited to transportation alone. Reports suggest that 532 power transformers have been rendered dysfunctional due to snowfall and thunderstorms, increasing the challenges faced by residents in remote areas.
The inclement weather has raised concerns for apple growers in Kullu as rain threatens the fruit setting process, leading to the premature shedding of blossoms.
Shimla too experienced inclement weather through the night. As the day progressed on Saturday, sunshine was witnessed.
The Meteorological Centre in Shimla has issued warnings of continued bad weather for the next four days across various parts of Himachal. An orange alert has been issued for heavy rain, thunderstorms and hailstorms on April 27 and 29, with Bilaspur, Chamba, Hamirpur, Kangra, Kullu, Mandi, Shimla, Sirmaur, Solan and Una districts likely to be affected. However, a respite is anticipated after May 1 as clearer skies are forecasted to prevail.
