SHIMLA: In a significant step towards improving the quality of education in Himachal Pradesh, the state government has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).
The agreement aims to modernise the state’s education system by focusing on teaching methods, curricula, teacher training and assessment systems to better equip students with essential 21st-century skills such as critical thinking, creativity, collaboration and communication.
The MoU was signed by Education Secretary Rakesh Kanwar on behalf of the Himachal Pradesh government and UNESCO Director and Representative Tim Curtis, along with Chief of Education Program Specialist Joyce Poan, representing the UNESCO.
The ceremony was attended by Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, who expressed his commitment to transforming the state’s education landscape.
Aim to make education more inclusive, sustainable
Under this collaboration, UNESCO will provide significant support in enhancing the education system of Himachal Pradesh, with a particular focus on making education more inclusive, sustainable and future-oriented.
One of the key elements of the agreement is the promotion of ‘Greening Education,’ which will incorporate environmental awareness and sustainable development into school curricula.
This initiative aims to help students develop the necessary knowledge and skills to address climate change and environmental challenges. Additionally, the partnership will encourage value-based education through sports, fostering holistic development in students.
CM Sukhu stresses bid to create smart schools
Chief Minister Sukhu emphasised that the government’s ongoing efforts to transform government schools into “smart schools” were already showing positive outcomes.
The initiative will expand digital learning infrastructure and improve the quality of education in remote areas of the state.
Education Minister Rohit Thakur highlighted the importance of the partnership with UNESCO, stating that it reflects the state’s dedication to providing global-standard education and ensuring that students are equipped with the skills required for the future.
The event was also attended by Director of Higher Education Amarjeet Sharma, Director of Elementary Education Ashish Kohli and other senior officials.
