Shimla: The iconic Atal Tunnel, a marvel of engineering nestled in the Himalayas, has once again emerged as the favourite destination for tourists visiting Himachal Pradesh during the winter season.
Between December 11 and December 29, 2024, as many as 96,007 outside-state vehicles entered the Rohtang Atal Tunnel while 96,885 vehicles exited the tunnel.
The Himachal Pradesh Police, under the leadership of DIG Gurdev Chand Sharma (Traffic, Tourist and Railway), have implemented robust measures to manage the influx of tourists and ensure road safety during this high-traffic period.
Tourist hotspots witness record influx
Apart from the Atal Tunnel, key destinations like Shimla, Dharamshala and Manali saw an overwhelming number of tourists.
At the Green Tax Barrier in Manali, 43,123 vehicles and 1,688 Volvo buses were recorded entering the town during the same period. The Shoghi police barrier in Shimla also experienced heavy traffic, with 74,039 vehicles recorded moving in and out between December 24 and December 29.
Traffic management and road safety measures
To handle the surge, the Himachal Pradesh Police deployed additional personnel from the Indian Reserve Battalion, with two dedicated traffic regulation teams stationed in Kullu-Manali and Shimla.
Other measures included enhanced monitoring systems through electronic systems and check barriers being installed to ensure seamless vehicular movement.
Tourists and drivers were provided regular updates on weather conditions and safety precautions. Police teams worked closely with local authorities for timely snow clearance and maintenance of major routes.
Festive cheer amid snowfall for New Year
With picturesque snowfall adding to the charm, Himachal Pradesh remains a top winter destination for holidaymakers. The Atal Tunnel, connecting Manali to Lahaul-Spiti, has become a symbol of winter adventure and scenic beauty, drawing visitors from across the country.
As the year concludes, the Himachal Pradesh Police continues to urge all tourists and locals to adhere to traffic rules and drive responsibly to ensure a safe and enjoyable winter experience.
