Shimla: Public Works Minister Vikramaditya Singh has been conspicuously left out of the Himachal Pradesh government’s official Independence Day duty roster, triggering speculation over whether his omission is merely an administrative oversight or carries a deeper political message.
A “Most Urgent” government communication listing arrangements for the August 15 Independence Day celebrations assigns the Chief Minister, Deputy Chief Minister, Speaker and other Cabinet ministers to preside over functions across the state. However, Vikramaditya Singh has not been assigned a single district-level function.
The omission is particularly striking as Vikramaditya Singh is a sitting Cabinet minister and one of the prominent younger faces of the Congress government. While almost the entire ministerial team figures in the duty chart, his name is conspicuously absent.
The list also assigns Sundar Singh Thakur, an MLA, to preside over the Independence Day function at Keylong in Lahaul-Spiti, making the exclusion of a Cabinet minister from the roster even more noticeable.
Administrative omission or political signal?
The key question now is: Why Vikramaditya Singh?
Was his name inadvertently missed while preparing the duty roster? Was he unavailable for the celebrations? Or was there a conscious decision not to assign him any Independence Day responsibility?
If it is a clerical error, questions are bound to arise over how such an omission occurred in an important government order marked “Most Urgent.” And if the decision was deliberate, the government will have to explain the rationale behind leaving out a Cabinet minister while assigning responsibilities to other ministers and even an MLA.
The issue could acquire political significance within the ruling Congress, particularly at a time when the role and standing of individual ministers remain a subject of considerable political discussion.
Vikramaditya Singh could not be contacted despite repeated calls on his mobile phone for his response to the issue.
For now, the August 15 duty chart leaves one conspicuous question hanging: Why has Vikramaditya Singh been left out?
