PALAMPUR: Chitranjan, a 29-year-old resident of Khalet village near Palampur in Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh, once the sole breadwinner of his family, is now bedridden and desperately seeking help for medical treatment. The fatal combination of poverty and severe illness has left his family in dire straits, with no solution in sight except for the generosity of kind-hearted people and the possibility of government assistance.
Chitranjan had been supporting his family by driving a JCB in the local area. However, his life took a tragic turn when he suddenly developed severe abdominal pain. He was initially treated at Palampur hospital, which referred him to Tanda for further examination. Despite undergoing an ultrasound at Tanda, doctors were unable to diagnose his condition. His pain persisted, forcing him to seek help at a private hospital in Kangra.

A CT scan revealed a shocking diagnosis: Chitranjan’s intestine had ruptured and he was given only a few days to live if left untreated. In a race against time, doctors performed an emergency surgery. The villagers, in a show of solidarity, managed to gather some money to cover the initial hospital expenses. However, Chitranjan’s condition has since worsened and he requires ongoing treatment, which he can no longer afford.
As the only earning member of his family, Chitranjan’s illness has brought his household to the brink of poverty. With his medical expenses already exceeding Rs 3.5 lakh, he now faces an uncertain future with no funds left for further treatment. The situation has become so dire that there is even a shortage of food at home, and the villagers who initially helped him have exhausted their resources.
Speaking in a frail voice, Chitranjan expressed his hope that generous people and the government might come to his aid as his relatives and villagers were no longer able to provide support. His mother, overwhelmed with emotion, pleaded for help, fearing the loss of her son.
The situation has been further exacerbated by the recent discontinuation of the HIMCARE scheme in Himachal Pradesh, which previously used to provide financial assistance for treatment. Had the scheme still been in place, Chitranjan might not have been forced to seek help from others.
