Shimla: In a decisive move to bolster India’s defence capabilities, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh virtually inaugurated the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile production unit at Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh on Sunday (May 11, 2025).
The landmark moment has sparked widespread appreciation across Himachal Pradesh, particularly among families of serving soldiers and martyrs, for whom national defence is deeply personal.
The BrahMos missile recently made headlines during Operation Sindoor where it was used to strike terrorist bases in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir with unprecedented precision.
For Himachal’s defence families, the missile is not just a technological marvel, but a symbol of national resolve, security, and a tribute to their lifelong sacrifices.
‘More than a missile, it’s a shield for our soldiers’
A war widow from Kangra, whose husband laid down his life during the Kargil conflict, reflected on the development with deep emotion: “When we heard about Operation Sindoor, we felt immense pride. Today, with BrahMos being produced on Indian soil, it feels like our soldiers are better protected than ever before. This isn’t just about military strength—it’s about reassuring families like ours that their sacrifices are valued and their loved ones are safer.”
Himachal: A Land of valour, legacy
Known as the “Land of the Brave”, Himachal Pradesh has a long-standing legacy of military service. In countless villages across the state, nearly every household has a son, daughter or sibling serving in the armed forces.
The BrahMos production unit inauguration resonates deeply here—not just as a national achievement, but as a continuation of a proud legacy built on duty, discipline and sacrifice.
A father of a serving soldier from Solan said: “This gives us peace of mind. We now know our children on the frontlines have the world’s fastest and most powerful missile behind them. It also shows that India is no longer dependent on foreign suppliers when it comes to defending its borders.”
Milestone for ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’
More than a strategic military advancement, the launch of the BrahMos unit is a strong step toward the government’s ‘Make in India’ and ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ missions.
For the youth in Himachal who dream of serving or contributing to national defence, this initiative opens doors to indigenous innovation, employment and active participation in building a self-reliant India.
The BrahMos missile, once a marvel of global defence collaboration, is now a proud product of Indian soil. For the people of Himachal, especially the families who have given their sons and daughters in the service of the nation, it’s more than a defence development. It’s a promise of strength, a validation of sacrifice and a shield for those still standing guard.
