Mandi, January 16 (Munish Sood)
The Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) finds itself in a storm of controversy following the suicide of Dharmapur depot driver Sanjay Kumar.
Regional Manager (RM) Vinod Kumar is now at the centre of a crisis, with a case of abetment to suicide filed against him. The case, registered at the Aut police station in Mandi, follows a written complaint by the deceased driver’s wife.
Complaint and investigation
The deceased’s sister, Sunita, submitted the complaint, alleging that RM Vinod Kumar provoked Sanjay Kumar to take his life.
A purported video recorded by Sanjay before his death, holding the RM accountable, has been accepted as evidence and will undergo forensic examination.
Padhar DSP Devraj confirmed the case under Section 108 and stated that Vinod Kumar would soon be summoned for questioning. Records from the Dharmapur depot will also be scrutinised.
Union accuses RM of halting increments of employees
Mandi Deputy Commissioner Vinod Thakur visited the bereaved family to offer condolences but failed to record the widow’s statement due to heightened emotions.
Meanwhile, depot workers, led by union in-charge Mangat Ram Negi, staged protests, demanding the RM’s immediate suspension and arrest. Employees accused Vinod Kumar of halting increments for 87 staff members, intensifying discontent.
Driver had faced previous suspension earlier
Sanjay Kumar had faced previous suspensions, allegedly for driving under the influence of liquor. A video blaming Vinod Kumar has since gone viral, sparking public outrage and further complicating the RM’s position.
The HRTC now faces immense pressure, with employees threatening larger protests unless swift action is taken. The case underscores deep-rooted grievances within the organisation and the urgent need for transparency in its handling.
