MANDI (Munish Sood)
In a bid to revive traditional festivities and promote outdoor recreational activities among children and youth, the Mandi Municipal Corporation is set to organise its first-ever kite festival on the occasion of Basant Panchami.
The event, fully sponsored by Ranker Valley Classes on Jail Road, will be held on Sunday (February 2, 2025) from 11 am to 4 pm at Paddal Upper Ground. The festival aims to preserve the age-old tradition of kite flying while also raising awareness about the harmful effects of drug abuse among children and youth.
With the increasing dependency on mobile gaming, the initiative seeks to encourage children to engage in outdoor activities and experience the joy of flying kites under the open sky.
Competition winner to get Rs 2,100
The event will feature a kite-flying competition, which will be open to all age groups. Alongside, self-help groups will set up stalls offering Mandi’s famous traditional delicacies, including siddu, kachouri and galgal ka chachha, providing attendees with a taste of the region’s rich culinary heritage.
The kite-flying competition is open to children under 16 years, as well as men and women of all ages. There is no entry fee and winners will be awarded cash prizes sponsored by Ranker Valley Classes. The first prize has a cash award of Rs 2,100, second prize Rs 1,500 and third prize Rs 1,100.
All participants will receive certificates of appreciation. The participants must bring their own kites and thread (manjha). Chinese thread and plastic kites are strictly prohibited. Children under 16 years must carry valid ID proof.
