Dr Menaka Ambadi, a 33-year-old Associate Professor at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) at Mandi in Himachal Pradesh, was found dead under suspicious circumstances on January 26, 2025.
Originally from Mumbai, Dr Ambadi was discovered unconscious in her official residence within the institute’s campus. Upon receiving information, the institute informed the Kamand police post under Padhar police station, following which a team reached the spot and took possession of the body.
During the initial investigation, the authorities recovered a note from her residence in which she expressed her struggles but did not blame anyone for her taking the step. The police have registered a case and initiated an investigation to determine the exact cause of her death.
This incident has sent shockwaves through the academic community, especially as it comes on the heels of another controversy at IIT-Mandi.
In December 2024, a professor was compulsorily retired following allegations of sexual harassment by two female PhD researchers. The institute’s internal complaint committee conducted an investigation, leading to the professor’s dismissal.
The IIT-Mandi administration is yet to release an official statement regarding Dr Ambadi’s demise. Colleagues and students have expressed their condolences, remembering her as a dedicated educator and researcher. The academic community awaits further details as the investigation progresses.
