Slams policies of former CM Jai Ram Thakur at Pandoh event

Former minister and BJP MLA from Mandi Sadar Anil Sharma once again criticised his own party’s decisions, taking a veiled dig at former Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur over the opening of educational institutions without proper facilities.
Speaking at the annual function of Pandwa Public High School in Pandoh, Sharma questioned the wisdom behind setting up schools and colleges in areas where they fail to attract students.
Sharma, while emphasising the need for quality education, pointed out that a significant number of schools opened in remote areas under previous BJP governments lacked basic infrastructure and student enrollment.
“There is no point in opening institutions for the sake of it. Many of these places couldn’t even attract 100 students. Instead of benefiting the community, these decisions turned into burdens,” he remarked.
Interestingly, Sharma clarified that the closure of over 1,000 schools during the Congress government’s tenure was a necessary step to rationalise resources. However, he criticised his own party’s leadership for not learning from this and continuing to open new schools and colleges without proper planning.

Institutions don’t win elections, he says

Sharma didn’t hold back in criticising some leaders who believed that inaugurating multiple institutions could secure electoral victories.
“Simply opening colleges or schools doesn’t win elections. People value quality over quantity. If Mandi offers better facilities, why would parents settle for subpar institutions closer to home?” he said.
Sharma also highlighted the proximity of Pandoh to Mandi, which already has superior infrastructure and educational facilities. “It’s better to invest in upgrading existing institutions rather than opening new ones that serve no purpose,” he added.

Sharma’s stance reflects growing rift in BJP

Sharma’s comments come at a time when the BJP is trying to regroup after its loss to the Congress in the 2022 Assembly elections.
While he did not directly name Jai Ram Thakur, his remarks about poorly planned decisions were seen as a critique of the former Chief Minister’s tenure.
This is not the first time Sharma has publicly questioned his party’s policies. His independent views and frequent critiques have sparked speculation about a widening rift within the BJP leadership in Himachal Pradesh.

Focus on drug abuse prevention

Addressing another pressing issue, Sharma called on parents to take responsibility for curbing drug abuse among the youth. “Parents cannot wait for the government to fix this issue. They must monitor their children and guide them toward constructive activities,” he said.

Tribute to Pandit Sukh Ram

Sharma also paid homage to his late father, Pandit Sukh Ram, acknowledging his contributions to India’s telecom revolution. “The country still remembers his visionary leadership. I am committed to carrying forward his legacy,” he added.
In conclusion, Sharma announced a personal donation of Rs 21,000 to the school. The event also featured colourful cultural performances by students, enjoyed by a large audience, including local leaders and residents.
