Himachal Pradesh continues to grapple with frequent road accidents, with yet another tragic incident reported on Monday evening in Rampur sub-division of Shimla district snuffing out three young lives.
A car carrying four persons plunged into a 200-metre-deep gorge near Bhadrash, resulting in the death of three occupants, including a husband and wife, and leaving one critically injured.
According to Rampur DSP Naresh Sharma, the accident occurred around 7 pm when the vehicle (HP06-B5069) was en route from Nankhari to Bajetli village. The car, believed to have gone out of control, veered off the road and fell into the steep gorge. Upon receiving information, police teams rushed to the site and began rescue operations.
The deceased were identified as Mintu Chauhan (27), his wife Sheetal and Alok Sharma (24), all residents of Nankhari. The fourth passenger, Arun Chauhan (23), sustained severe injuries and is undergoing treatment at Civil Hospital, Khaneri.
Rescue operations were hampered by darkness, making it difficult to retrieve the bodies from the gorge. While two bodies were recovered by 8 pm, the third body was retrieved only by 11 pm.
The bodies have been sent to Khaneri hospital for postmortem and will be handed over to the family after formalities. The injured passenger is reportedly in critical condition but receiving appropriate care.
The accident has sent shockwaves through the victims’ village. DSP Naresh stated, “The reasons for the accident are yet to be determined. Preliminary investigations are underway to ascertain the cause.”
Himachal Pradesh’s mountainous terrain often makes its roads treacherous, contributing to the frequent occurrence of such accidents. The government and authorities continue to urge drivers to exercise extreme caution while navigating these challenging routes.
