Anti-Drug Act in Himachal, Strict Action Against Employees Involved in Drug Trade

Shimla: In a major crackdown on the drug menace, the Himachal Pradesh government is set to introduce the Himachal Pradesh Anti-Drug Act in the upcoming Budget session on March 10, 2025.

This new legislation aims to strengthen legal provisions, impose harsher penalties on repeat offenders, and promote rehabilitation programs for addicts and first-time minor offenders.

At the same time, Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has announced strict action against government employees found involved in drug trafficking.

Any government official against whom concrete evidence is found will be immediately dismissed from service. Senior officials have been directed to initiate termination procedures for such employees.

Special Task Force Formed to Tackle Drug Networks

To intensify the crackdown, the government has set up a Special Task Force (STF) on Narcotics and Organized Crime, headed by senior police officials.

The STF will focus on:
• Dismantling drug syndicates
• Seizing illegally acquired assets
• Conducting preventive detention of habitual offenders

The STF operates across three zones—Dharamshala, Parwanoo, and Mandi, with its headquarters in Shimla. The task force is required to submit fortnightly progress reports to the government.

Crackdown on Drug Trade Gains Momentum

The Himachal Pradesh Police have already intensified their actions against drug peddlers. In 2024, authorities arrested 2,515 individuals under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

Large-scale raids were conducted across 40-50 locations, leading to significant drug seizures. Moreover, assets worth ₹9 crore, amassed through illegal drug trade, were confiscated.

Chief Minister Sukhu has also issued strict warnings to police and administrative officers, stating that any negligence in tackling drug trafficking will not be tolerated. Officials failing to take action will face disciplinary measures.

A Comprehensive Strategy Against Drug Menace

Apart from enforcement, the state government is launching awareness campaigns to educate the public on the dangers of drug abuse. With the upcoming Anti-Drug Act, Himachal Pradesh is set to introduce tougher legal measures to curb the drug problem.

This decisive approach underscores the government’s commitment to eradicating drug abuse and securing the future of the state’s youth.
