In a significant step towards providing relief to the victims of the tragic flash flood incident in Kangra district, a compensation amount of ₹1,22,41,950 (Rupees One Crore Twenty-Two Lakh Forty-One Thousand Nine Hundred Fifty) has been deposited under the Employees’ Compensation Act, 1923, in compliance with the directions of the Court of the Commissioner, Dharamshala-cum-Senior Civil Judge, Dr. Hakikat Dhanda.
This case pertains to the unfortunate incident that occurred on June 25, 2025, when a sudden flash flood caused by a cloudburst resulted in the death/disappearance of eight employees of Indira Priyadarshini Hydro Power Private Limited. The incident took place in District Kangra, Himachal Pradesh, between approximately 3:00 PM and 8:00 PM.
In the matter, the employer had reported the accident under the Workmen’s Compensation Rules, 1924. However, initially, the compensation amount was not deposited as required under Section 8(1) of the Act. Taking serious cognizance of the lapse, the Court issued immediate directions for compliance.
In compliance with the Court’s directions, the employer has now deposited the entire compensation amount through a demand draft in favor of the Commissioner under the Employees’ Compensation Act, Dharamshala. This amount will be disbursed to the dependents of the deceased/missing employees.
The Court has also directed that copies of the order be sent to the District Legal Services Authorities (DLSA) of Kangra, Chamba, Doda (Jammu & Kashmir), and Deoria (Uttar Pradesh), so that necessary assistance can be provided to the affected families in the disbursement of the compensation.
It has further been clarified that, if the dependents so desire, the compensation amount may be transferred to the jurisdiction of their respective districts, thereby facilitating a smoother disbursement process.
This step reflects the Court’s commitment to labor welfare laws and ensures timely financial assistance to the affected families.
