BJP MLA Ranbir Singh Nikka has urged the Himachal Pradesh Government to give priority to Nurpur if it is serious about the formation of new districts in the state. Addressing the media, he said that considering the geographical conditions, vast area and administrative requirements of Kangra district, Nurpur deserves district status.

Nikka stated that Nurpur serves as a major administrative and commercial hub for surrounding regions, including Bhattiyat, Jawali, Indora and Fatehpur. Residents of many remote areas have to spend an entire day travelling to and from the district headquarters for official work. Granting district status to Nurpur would bring administrative services closer to the people, saving both time and resources.

The MLA said that the demand for making Nurpur a district has been pending for many years. He recalled that the then Dhumal government had established an Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Office in Nurpur in 2003, which was later closed after a change in government.

Highlighting the administrative infrastructure already available in the town, Nikka noted that Nurpur has a Revenue District Headquarters, Superintendent of Police (SP) Office, two Sessions Courts, a district-level Forensic Office, RTO Office, District Maternal and Child Hospital, and MS Nurpur Hospital. These facilities, he said, strengthen the case for granting district status to Nurpur.

He further pointed out that Nurpur shares its borders with two neighbouring states, making it a strategically important border region. To effectively tackle drug trafficking and other anti-social activities, a strong administrative and policing framework is essential. He added that the SP Office in Nurpur was established during the tenure of the former Jai Ram government with this objective in mind.

Nikka emphasized that district-level administrative leadership and adequate resources are necessary for ensuring better law and order, border security and efficient governance in the region.

The MLA urged the state government to seriously consider the long-standing public demand and evaluate the proposal for district status for Nurpur in view of its geographical significance, existing administrative structure and public convenience.
