Mild earthquake tremors were felt in Himachal Pradesh’s Kullu district on Monday (February 3, 2025) morning.
According to the Meteorological Department, the earthquake struck around 6.50 am with its epicentre located at a depth of 5 km beneath the ground in Kullu. The earthquake measured 3.4 on the Richter scale.
Tremors felt in parts of adjoining Mandi district too
Tremors were also felt in adjoining areas of Mandi and in Shimla district, causing panic among residents, many of whom rushed out of their homes.
There have been no reports of any casualties or damage to property so far.
Several districts fall in high-risk seismic zone
Himachal Pradesh falls under seismic zones IV and V, making it highly vulnerable to earthquakes.
The districts such as Kangra, Chamba, Lahaul-Spiti, Kullu, and Mandi are considered particularly sensitive to seismic activity.
According to experts, earthquakes are primarily caused by the movement and collision of tectonic plates beneath the Earth’s surface.
The Earth has seven major tectonic plates that are constantly shifting. When these plates collide, fault lines are created and pressure builds up as the edges of the plates get stuck.
Over time, this pressure causes the plates to break, releasing stored energy that travels to the Earth’s surface in the form of seismic waves, resulting in an earthquake.
Earthquakes with magnitudes between 3 and 3.9 fall under the “very light” category on the Richter scale. Globally, around 49,000 such quakes are recorded annually.
While they are noticeable, they rarely cause any significant damage.
