There appears to be no end to the drug menace in Himachal Pradesh with smugglers frequently attempting to bring contraband into the state.
Days after two real brothers from Punjab’s Mohali were arrested in Shimla, the police in Hamirpur’s Bhota area arrested two more youths from Punjab and seized 9.83 grams of chitta.
The incident occurred near Morsoo during a routine police check. The accused, identified as Rana (27) of Patiala and Vinamra Bains (24) of Ropar, were travelling in a car from Nadaun to Shimla. Officials became suspicious during the stop and found the drugs during a thorough search.
Hamirpur Superintendent of Police (SP) Bhagat Singh Thakur said, “Both accused have been arrested under the NDPS Act and will be presented in court. Their interrogation during remand will focus on uncovering any larger drug supply networks.”
The police have also seized the car used in the smuggling attempt. The SP urged residents to report drug-related activities promptly, emphasising that public cooperation was vital in combating the growing narcotics problem.
This arrest highlights the persistent challenge of drug smuggling in Himachal Pradesh, where incidents of heroin, chitta and cannabis trafficking are frequent. Despite continuous crackdowns, traffickers exploit routes connecting Himachal to neighbouring states like Punjab, where much of the contraband originates.
The government and law enforcement agencies are under increasing pressure to address the issue through stricter monitoring and public awareness campaigns. Residents hope for more robust measures to curtail the inflow of drugs and protect the state’s youth from the devastating effects of substance abuse.
