In a dramatic turn of events, Himachal Pradesh Public Works Department (PWD) Minister Vikramaditya Singh tendered his resignation on Wednesday (February 28, 2024), citing significant discord within the Congress-led government and expressing deep-seated concerns about the state’s political landscape.
Addressing a press conference in Shimla, Vikramaditya underscored the urgent need to scrutinise the root causes behind the imminent collapse of the Congress regime and questioned how such a precarious situation had arisen despite the party’s commanding majority in the Assembly.
Vikramaditya reflected on the collective efforts that culminated in the formation of the government after the 2022 Assembly elections, acknowledging the key roles played by Congress president Pratibha Singh and Leader of Opposition Mukesh Agnihotri.
Expressing his motivation to address the government’s functioning, he emphasised the paramount importance of his relationship with the people over any official position. He lamented the marginalisation and neglect faced by legislators, highlighting issues of fiscal mismanagement that were repeatedly brought to the attention of the party’s high command in Delhi.
Vikramaditya lamented the damage suffered by the youth and dedicated party workers amidst the prevailing circumstances, questioning the government’s capacity to deliver effective governance despite overwhelming support from constituents.
With a heavy heart, Vikramaditya detailed instances of deliberate humiliation and attempts to undermine his authority as a minister. He adamantly asserted his refusal to succumb to pressure tactics, drawing inspiration from his father, six-term late Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh, a stalwart in Himachal Pradesh politics.
Vikramaditya’s emotional discourse extended to the disregard shown to his father, a six-time Chief Minister, whose legacy he vowed to uphold despite the indifference displayed by the party high command. He expressed disappointment at the absence of recognition for Virbhadra Singh’s contributions, underscoring the need for emotional consideration alongside political deliberation.
Announcing his resignation from the ministry, he conveyed his intention to consult supporters before determining his future course of action. He emphasised his unwavering commitment to the people of Himachal Pradesh and reiterated his family’s enduring loyalty to the Congress.
