Assistant Commissioner Food Safety, Chamba, Deepak Anand, informed that a special inspection drive was conducted today along NH-154A at Saru and Udaipur, during which around 25–30 vehicles, including buses carrying sweets and other food items, were intercepted and thoroughly inspected.
During the inspection, approximately 2 quintals of sweets of different varieties were found unfit for human consumption. The sweets were found to be excessively coloured, decomposed and insect-infested. They were also being transported in rotten and unhygienic containers for supply to the general public.
The Food Safety Department destroyed the entire stock at the inspection site to prevent the distribution of unsafe food items among consumers.
Deepak Anand further informed that during the ongoing special drive in the festival season this month, a total of 24 samples of different varieties of sweets have been collected for laboratory testing.
In another development, two samples of paneer collected last month on suspicion of being analogue paneer have been found substandard. Notices have been issued to the concerned vendors for further legal proceedings.
The Food Safety Department has appealed to the public to remain vigilant while purchasing sweets and other food products, particularly during the festive season, and assured that strict action will continue against those involved in selling or transporting substandard and unsafe food items.
