In a major breakthrough against interstate drug trafficking, the Shimla Police have seized 1.120 kilograms of heroin valued at nearly ₹6 crore in the international market and arrested a suspected supplier from Haryana before the narcotics could be delivered in the state capital.
The accused, Vijay Kumar (22), son of Darshan Singh and a resident of Narayangarh in Haryana’s Ambala district, was arrested by the Shimla Police Special Cell on August 3 following a specific intelligence input. Police intercepted him at the Shoghi barrier, preventing what officials described as a major heroin consignment from reaching its intended recipients in Shimla.
According to Superintendent of Police (Shimla) Gaurav Singh, the accused had allegedly transported the heroin from Haryana and was on his way to the Tara Devi area to hand over the consignment to local contacts. Acting on credible intelligence, the Special Cell tracked the suspect and apprehended him before the delivery could be completed.
Police recovered 1.120 kilograms of heroin, commonly known as chitta, from the accused. A case has been registered under the relevant provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, and a detailed investigation is underway.
ASP City Mehar Panwar said investigators are questioning the accused to trace the origin of the heroin, identify the supply chain, and establish links with the wider interstate drug trafficking network.
Record Anti-Narcotics Drive
The latest seizure adds to a series of significant drug busts by Shimla Police this year. In March, the Special Cell arrested another Ambala-based trafficker near the Shimla bus stand with 288 grams of heroin, while in April, Kumarsain Police seized 9.28 kilograms of opium and ₹12 lakh in cash, leading to the arrest of three accused.
Highlighting the force’s intensified crackdown on narcotics, SP Gaurav Singh said Shimla Police have recovered more than 4 kilograms of heroin in 2026, nearly four times the total heroin seized during the previous two years combined.
In addition to heroin, police have seized 14 kilograms of opium, 15 kilograms of charas (hashish), over 5 kilograms of poppy husk, 11.6 grams of LSD, and around 60 grams of methamphetamine (Ice). They have also destroyed more than one million illegally cultivated cannabis plants across the district this year.
Police believe the latest seizure could provide crucial leads into a larger interstate narcotics network, with further arrests and recoveries expected as the investigation progresses.
