The 75-day Design Development Workshop on wood carving concluded successfully on December 30 in Samra (Runukothi), under the Bharmour Assembly constituency. The closing ceremony was marked by a tree plantation drive led by Bharmaur Tehsildar Shri Tej Raj, along with the entire DDW Samra 2025 team. An exhibition of products crafted during the workshop was also organized by participating artisans.
All participants expressed gratitude to the Himachal Pradesh State Handicrafts & Handloom Corporation Ltd. (HPSHHCL), Shimla, and the Development Commissioner (Handicrafts), Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, for supporting this initiative in the remote Chamba district.
Chief Guest Shri Tej Singh, Tehsildar of Bharmaur, celebrated the success and admired the artisans’ outstanding work. HPSHHCL Chamba in-charge Shri Sheetal personally welcomed the dignitaries.
Designer Shri Laxman Kumar, empaneled with All Handicrafts, was appointed by HPSHHCL Shimla, while master craftsman Shri Hukum Chand conducted the workshop with dedication and expertise. Together, they trained 20 artisans who had no prior experience in wood carving. The trainees produced remarkable works, including a historic 5-foot tall Ardhanarishwar sculpture—a feat never before achieved in any workshop across Himachal Pradesh.
For the artisans, this workshop became a milestone in their lives. In the harsh winter months from December to April, when physical connectivity and employment opportunities are scarce in the region, this training has ensured them sustainable livelihood. Participants appealed to the authorities to continue such training programs, calling wood carving a lifesaving skill. They pledged to work hard and bring their products to national and international markets, securing a better future.
