NEW DELHI: Bollywood actor Celina Jaitly has approached a local court with a domestic violence petition, alleging that she was subjected to persistent physical, sexual, emotional and verbal cruelty by her Austrian husband Peter Haag.
The matter was taken up in a Mumbai court on Tuesday by Judicial Magistrate SC Tadye, who issued a notice to Haag and scheduled the next hearing for December 12. Jaitly, represented through the law firm Karanjwala & Co, has invoked provisions of the Domestic Violence Act, accusing her husband of sustained abuse, manipulation and cruelty.
The 47-year-old actor stated in her application that the treatment meted out to her was so severe that she was compelled to leave their home in Austria and return to India for her safety.
Married in September 2010, the couple has three children. In her plea, the former Miss India claimed that shortly after their wedding, Haag allegedly stopped her from continuing her professional work. She described him as having a volatile nature, self-centred behaviour patterns and a dependence on alcohol, which she said created a distressing and unsafe environment.
Jaitly has recounted multiple incidents of alleged verbal and physical assault in her petition. She also pointed out that Haag initiated divorce proceedings in an Austrian court in August this year.
The actor has requested the Indian court to order Haag to pay Rs 50 crore as compensation, along with Rs 10 lakh per month towards maintenance. She has additionally sought access to her three children, who currently reside with their father in Austria.
